Coloring Comics the Steve Hamaker Way: Episode 1!

Here's a video tutorial thingy I made recently. I want to try and make a few of these to go through some of the steps of my coloring process.

I know the audio and video don't match up really well, but the info should still be there.

Ha! Steve, love the hilarious opening bit with the music starting and cartoon-you. And then Thorn! The "Steve Hamaker Way" is awesome. You are such a pro. So cool to know the REALLY detailed process, even when you show stuff like this (your other colouring tutorials for example) it's still obviously not something you can just learn and then do, there's still the artist's MAGIC that you have inside you even if you KNOW all the technical or theory stuff. I love all the details you shared on this one, such as the fact that it's bitmap and not grayscale, and everything else you showed in this first step. The audio / video match wasn't that bad. Looking forward to seeing more in this new series of in-depth tutorial thingies!

Heh, and for anyone watching for the details, the two panels Steve shows here are on pages 946 and 949 (the 3D view of the different layers) from the 2006 One Volume Edition - the upcoming Book 7, Ghost Circles! I CAN'T WAIT! Grab your One Volume with me and flip through all the stuff that's going to be so amazing in colour! Pages 856-857, 870-871, 885, 894, 912-914, 940, 945, 950, 980, 984 and so many more!

(And, that layered one, Steve coloured back in April and blogged about it at this link below)

This is nice, Steve! I'm sure it will help a lot of people.

Instead of using "select color range" to delete the white space in your lineart layer, have you tried setting that layer to "multiply" (in the blending options for the layer)? This makes the white space invisible without needing to be deleted. However, if the layer is bitmapped and not anti-aliased, I guess it wouldn't make much difference, but might be easier.

Thanks guys!

Yeah Neil, I know about multiply but the way I set up the files for print works better if I do it this way.

Basically, I am just going to go through everything I know. Most of it is self-taught stuff, so I'm sure I do lots of things weirdly. Haha.

I appreciate the feedback!
