More Coloring Stuff!!

I promise I will explain my crazy coloring tricks soon. I will most likely post something at the Boneville site in a few weeks that will be more complete.

This is my tablet... without which I am nothing. I should get a new one, but I love this old thing, and it works for me just fine!

Click this!

Some quick answers to some of you who are interested.. and also have a grasp on Photoshop.

1. I create my documents using very high res line-art. Scanned b&w 'text' @ 600dpi. I convert the line-art to grayscale, Duplicate layer, delete the bottom copy, select the white, delete white on second layer, lock the layer so I do not accidentally color on it.

2. I color on layers beneath the line-art. A layer for each element on the page.. i.e. Fone Bone, Smiley, Sky... all get separate layers.

3. The color guide below is a portion of the one I use. I created it by figuring out each character's colors in daylight. So this color guide only works as a basic reference. I let the scenes dictate the final colors. As you can see in the books, Fone Bone can be blue, orange, white, gray... depending on his surroundings.

4. I use the magic wand to select large closed areas on the line-art layer, then go to the corresponding layer beneath and fill/stroke 4 pixels. Stroking gives you a little bleed under the line so you avoid ghosting.
This only works for areas that are inked with closed lines. I airbrush within the lines by hand for areas that this technique doesn’t work for.

I realize that there are many ways to do all of these steps, some may be easier, but this is the way I taught myself over the years and it works for me. Ha, ha! More to come later on!

Thanks for the info on coloring - very helpful. Steve, I wonder if you could help me out with inking/line technique - I have been trying to find out what the right tool(s) are for getting a line pretty much exactly like you do - a line that is distinct and has nice variation so it doesn't look mechanical.

I've have been trying various nibs with no luck and am not sure what to try next. Can you comment (or post about) the tools you use to line?

(Or email me at pixelmech at gee mail dot com?)

Thanks! Enjoy the blog!

There's no need to duplicate a layer and delete the one below just to get a "floating" layer. If you double click on the background layer you can convert it to "layer 0" and delete the white directly.

Another option, instead of deleting the white, is to set the layer to "multiply" - it gives you a softer transition from the transparent parts to the line than you get from just deleting white.

Very cool.. I've also found anything more than a Graphire unnecessary. :)

to delete the white and place color on layer below, you can select B&W art layer and set it to "darken" which will make white transparent.

I like the method of floating the drawing layer and then setting it to multiply (works best if your lineart has anything less than pure black. Like pencil lines.) But if you want to remove white from the layer there are filters that can do the work for you. Here are a couple:

Steve, great tutorial here. I really dig how you set up the color palette. Is there a particular way you choose your colors, or are you eyeballing what you're looking for?

As for all the talk on "deleting the white," I decided to share this...(even though like Steve said, there are lots of ways to accomplish the same thing). Multiplying and darkening are great, but they don't really DELETE the white, they just HIDE it... This is how to DELETE it if that's what you wish to do. No filters needed, this tool is built in to Photoshop.

Make sure your line art is grey-scale. Double-click the layer to change it from "background" to "layer 0." Now, go to you Channels palette. At the bottom of it, you'll see 4 icons, the first of which is a circle. Clicking this will automatically select ALL the white in the image. Now just click "delete" and you're left with nothing but black line art. Should you have some grey or white smudges left, just adjust levels to get it all 100% black.
