Coloring with Photoshop!

Here is a real quick step-by-step look at how I color using Photoshop. Obviously I could go into more detail, but have a look at these pics and someday I will explain them. HA!!

It looks like you are laying the blue down as a background color (presumably on a layer above the line art- set to "Multiply"). Then you add the larger fields of color-like the rocks and (sp?)Roque Jah (with the paint bucket I guess, or maybe the lasso plus "alt-delete"). Then you build in the smaller fields of color- the critters and the bones followed by highlights and shadows which appear to be painted on -probably at a low transparency setting using a brush set on "multiply" layer by layer.

Am I even close?

The black/white orignal scan is the layer that is probably set to 'multiply' then all the other layers are just normal layers and painted normally and can be stacked which will cover stray color on lower layers but will always show thru the 'multiply' b/w layer.

would love to know the scan res.

i imagine the 'B/W lineart layer set to multiply' option is the one used here, but another way of doing it is...create your hi-res B/W lineart file (scan at 600dpi and clean it up) 'save as' samplepage_k as a bitmap. downsize this file to 300dpi greyscale and convert to CMYK, copy and paste into a newly created 5th CHANNEL, deleting everything from the CMYK channel and save as samplepage_c.psd. when you start colouring in layers you use the 5th channel as a guide. When you are finished colouring, flatten layers, trap the 5th Channel and decrease selection by 2 pixels and fill with 50C 50M 40Y, delete the 5 th channel and save. when you collect these 2 files (600dpi B/W and 300 dpi colour) in indesign or quark what you get is perfect allignment and totally sharp Black line over beautiful colours. The Black line art really needs to be hi-res and super sharp, but the colour file only needs to be 200-300dpi. allowing both to be samll in file size, even 400 dpi colour files can be huge. anyway my two cents and probably only confused people more.

brenb, that is a ton of work to get something that can be done simply. At my work we have an action that we created in Photoshop that will "delete whites." It's a matter of copying the line layer and then go under Select=Load Selection.

I have a how-to about this on my blog.

thought it might sound complicated alright, ha! the method is for print not web as it allows you creates a fantastic hi-res pure black line art that 'sits on' the colur file when you colle3ct in indesign without having to have the colour file at a higher res than 300dpi. and is specifically for printed comics.

We use that "delete whites" action for TV, but can be used for print as well -- we scan in 300dpi, but can be for comics (600 dpi, or whatever you choose). It works like a charm because you retain all the half-tones.

I use it for my side illustrator work -- it's also nice because you can change the color of the line itself, however you like.

one good way for cleaning up straight B&W artwork quickly is to scan in at high res (300 works but i use 600-800) then go image>adjustments>threshhold. I then shrink it back down to 300dpi in 'imagesize'.
You can then set the lineart on top as a multiply layer and paint draw underneath. (much of whats already been said)

i'm going to take a page from your book -- i see that you've colored the blocks as sky first, and built layers from there. in the initial layers, you haven't worried about "staying within the lines" so much, and later colored over. this must really speed up the process! thanks for posting this.
